Monocytes and mental health- big connection!

Monocytes and mental health- big connection!

Monocytes one of the white blood cells usually first and last on scene for infection and inflammation. Research shows they have a very close relationship with the digestive system, so good at reflecting chronic inflammation there.

Monocytes are a big deal in terms of white cells and cytokine production. Now Cytokines and mental health big connection! So we shouldn't be surprised to learn monocyctes and mental health big connection! but not only do you often seen elevated monocyctes in many mental health presentations, now the research is telling us that their monocytes are even more inflammatory! Than your monocytes or my monocytes.

So its the double whammy you have more of them, more often, and we also see this up regulation of inflammatory and immune activating genes.

So its like you have these monocyres on steroids, and the last really interesting piece of information is not only are they kind of mega inflammatory but there is evidence these monocytes have damaged Corticosteroids.

Scale back, what does that mean?.. well all white cells have receptors for cortisol because cortisol has a very important role with immune regulating, now if those receptors are not working well its like they can't hear the cortisol.

So what does that effectively mean? When cortisol is saying “hey guys cut back too much inflammation!” the monocytes are mute and can't hear the cortisol!!

This is a really interesting area coming up a lot with mental health and the incredible interaction between the immune system and our mental wellbeing.

This information can really be an access point to help people with anxiety and depression and many mental health conditions.
