Monocytes and mental health- big connection!

Monocytes and mental health- big connection!

Monocytes one of the white blood cells usually first and last on scene for infection and inflammation. Research shows they have a very close relationship with the digestive system, so good at reflecting chronic inflammation there.

Monocytes are a big deal in terms of white cells and cytokine production. Now Cytokines and mental health big connection! So we shouldn't be surprised to learn monocyctes and mental health big connection! but not only do you often seen elevated monocyctes in many mental health presentations, now the research is telling us that their monocytes are even more inflammatory! Than your monocytes or my monocytes.

So its the double whammy you have more of them, more often, and we also see this up regulation of inflammatory and immune activating genes.

So its like you have these monocyres on steroids, and the last really interesting piece of information is not only are they kind of mega inflammatory but there is evidence these monocytes have damaged Corticosteroids.

Scale back, what does that mean?.. well all white cells have receptors for cortisol because cortisol has a very important role with immune regulating, now if those receptors are not working well its like they can't hear the cortisol.

So what does that effectively mean? When cortisol is saying “hey guys cut back too much inflammation!” the monocytes are mute and can't hear the cortisol!!

This is a really interesting area coming up a lot with mental health and the incredible interaction between the immune system and our mental wellbeing.

This information can really be an access point to help people with anxiety and depression and many mental health conditions.

Ear infections and Chiropractic

Ear infections and Chiropractic

Ear infections (commonly the middle ear) are often seen in babies and children under 6 year-old as their immunity is still developing.

It frequently presents after a cold and often resolves on its own. However, symptoms such as earache, headache, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite and more can be disabling for both the parents and the child.

How can we manage ear infections through Chiropractic care? Spinal manipulations are done to enhance the biomechanics of the spine and restore nerve activities that are responsible for mediating temperature and fluid level of the body.

Cervical adjustments also help drain away lymphatic build up in the head and neck region caused by muscle tightness. This will indirectly restore proper function of the Eustachian tube-which is heavily involved in the reoccurrence of middle ear infection, also known as Otitis Media. These adjustments are also helpful in building up the immunity of the child in the long run for optimal functioning of the body.

Even though antibiotics that serve to attack bacteria are commonly prescribed to treat ear infections, most cases of ear infections are actually caused by viruses.

Repetitive usage of antibiotic is also proven to contribute to future infections according to the Journal of the American Medical Association.

If you are interested in minimizing the intake of antibiotics of your little one for ear infections, try giving Chiropractic treatment a go here at Cranbourne Family Chiropractic and Wellness Centre.

We utilize gentle and low force approaches well suited for babies and kids that are just as effective.

Could breathing cure your constipation?

Could breathing cure your constipation?

I came across a fabulous little book called “Roads to Rejuvenation” by Dr Elsie M Port. She was a Chiropractor, Naturopath, Nutritionist, Physiotherapist, Biochemist, Physio Analyst and Metaphysician. She was from Adelaide and published this book when she was 73 and that was in 1946.

One of the many interesting things mentioned in this book is the ‘power of breath’. She has a number of simple breathing techniques to cure common conditions and revitalize the body.

I recently tried one on my 4 year old son and it worked! So here it is the simple and drug free cure to constipation by Dr Elsie Port:

  • Drink 4-5 (I gave my son 2) glasses of warm water with a little lemon juice.
  • Then take in a deep breath filling the lower parts of the lungs
  • As you breath in, push the abdomen out
  • As you breath out pull the abdomen in

That’s it! The breathing action massages the organs and intestines, waking them up. The water re-hydrates the body and the lemon gets the metabolism firing. No laxatives required. I got my son to do approx 10-15 breaths in 2 sets. Half an hour later it was action stations.

And the best part is it’s pretty much free and actually worked.

Give it a try.

And stay tuned I’ll let you know how the other breathing exercises go.

High iron? You might be Rusting on the Inside!

High iron, Rusting on the inside!

Too much iron can have potentially damaging effects.

It’s an accelerant to vascular disease, increases infections, deregulates the immune, deposits in the adrenals and pituitary, leads to liver disease, can effect brain in terms of mood disorders, increases coronary artery disease,  can make joints wear away quicker as a promoter to tissue damage.

It can build up dramatically over time and the effects are very subtle.

Currently they are looking at Alzheimer’s and dementia and seeing the effects of extra iron deposits in the brain.

For the majority of nutrients the body has a very good capacity to get rid of what it doesn’t want but from an evolutionary point the body has evolved to hold onto iron and does not have very good excretory pathways for it. Males are more at risk with a RDI of 7mg daily compared with the average male that consumes 17mg daily.

A subset of those with chronic fatigue, have elevated iron as a contributing factor.

This is concerning because I see so many products and supplements with added iron.

We should only ever be giving or consuming iron at safe levels so you’re not delivering iron to tissues that will be associated with oxidative stress.
