During waking hours our brain is producing metabolites that need to be removed and surprisingly, this happens more quickly while we’re asleep.

Sleep is a vital function in all species and our brain changes more during sleep than we’ve realized. Sleep actually induces structural changes in the brain.

When awake we can’t remove accumulating toxins like amyloid beta. 

When we are asleep the spaces between brain neurons increase 60% so allowing greater cerebrospinal fluid and doubling amyloid beta removal. 

It’s anticipated that all metabolites are detoxified effectively during sleep so quantity and quality of sleep is associated with many, maybe all, neurological disorders.

Like all kids my two get sick from time to time. I’m pretty lucky because I try feed them lots of nutritious foods, plenty of water and some vitamin supplements especially in winter. But they are shocking when it comes to runny noses. I’m forever having to hand them tissues and the younger one is perfectly happy to let it drip down his face. Yuck!

So I’ve come across this book written in 1976 by Frank Bahr “The Acupressure Health Book”. Among many conditions listed is Colds and catarrh. This is a massage technique not requiring needles as in acupuncture. I’ve taken a snap shot of the book below. My son found the massage very relaxing. Actually he said “again, again”. The great news is it stopped his nose running. When I say stopped I mean it instantly stopped. Hours later it started to return I just did it again and it stopped again. Amazing!! Because he no longer had the mucus running down his throat it also stopped him coughing and started breathing a lot easier.

Stress and anxiety in children can be a result of many different things.



Stress and anxiety in children can be a result of many different things.  



A diet high in processed foods, lack of physical exercise, poor sleep, fears, low concentration span, illness, allergies and environmental stress can all impact the way a child copes with their life.  

Two of the best ways to help children cope is to make sure they eat and sleep well – including fresh fruit in their snacks, wholegrain carbohydrates like oats for breakfast, fried brown rice and vegetables for dinner and adding protein like chicken, tuna, eggs and nuts for health and development, all high in nutrients for the demands of energetic kids. 

If children are always hungry look at the types of food that they are eating – adding a protein at each meal makes a big difference to staying full for longer (email me at anna@cranbournefamilychiro.com.au for a list of food and meal ideas).  Sleep is very important for children so getting this right will also help them get a better start to the day. Winding down in the evening with a book, colouring in or a bath will all set the tone for a good night’s sleep.
